HILARY WHITE - THE ENDLESS ONE
Hot off the press - images from the opening night of Hilary White’s solo show…happening right now @ Paradigm Gallery + Studio in Philly.
ANIMAE DEMENTIA
Berlin has been invaded again with huge paper creatures/animals devouring up their creators, French street artists duo R.ö and l’Homme Pendu. They use a ‘wheat-pasted’ paper technique to place the creatues into the landscape and then suspend themselves within the work, appearing to be gobbled up by the creatures.
From R.ö:
“Here is my latest project an latest session , featuring l’Homme Pendu, a french friend of mine and myself, R.ö called Animae Dementia, mixing rope access working and paste ups. Animae Dementia, means “soul madness”, or “animals madness”, highlights on crazy mystical beasts, put into urban spaces, and interacting with men, in different ways.”

JENNIFER RUBELL’S NUTCRACKERS

Nutcrackers
In the Dallas Contemporary’s largest gallery space, Nutcrackers consists of 18 life-size interactive sculptures of women surrounding a pedestal holding one ton of Texas pecans. Each prefabricated female mannequin is mounted on her side in an odalisque position and has been retooled to function as a nutcracker. Visitors interact with each sculpture by placing a pecan in the mannequin’s inner thigh, then pushing down the upper leg to crack open the nut so they may eat it in the gallery. Inspired by nutcrackers depicting female figures - and in particular one found on the internet of Hillary Clinton - these interactive sculptures embody the two polar stereotypes of female power: the idealized, sexualized nude female form; and the too-powerful, nut-busting überwoman. The work also serves as a prompt to action, encouraging the viewer to transgress the traditional viewer-artwork boundary and complete the work by participating in it.
I increasingly am inclined to just react to new art I see that I like this much with ‘wow’.

FORCE OF NATURE
Artist, Lorenzo Quinn’s is no stranger to attention, his life-sized installations have always been grabbers. His newest works, a series of sculptures entitled, Force of Nature are no exception..these gravity-defying statues seem to be in a state of perpetual motion.
At the base of the sculptures are these words from the artist… “We humans think of ourselves as supreme beings, above all others and in absolute control of our destiny and our surroundings. We live with a false sense of security, only to be awakened by Mother Nature’s fury, almost as if she needs to remind us of her presence and our responsibility towards her child (the Earth). After having seen the ravaged coast of Thailand and the hurricane that affected the Southern States, I decided to create a sculpture dedicated to Mother Nature. This would be reminiscent of the early statues made as peace offerings to the gods in the hope of quenching their anger. In essence, people are not very different today from the people who lived thousands of years ago. We still devote ourselves to symbols in order to escape our destiny.”

MATCHSTICK MEN / WOLFGANG STILLER
German artist, Wolfgang Stiller’s install of burned out faces…or burned out lives laying in their matchbox coffins is part of an exhibit entitled “burnout”, now at the Python Gallery in Zurich until April 30th, 2013.

KAWS COMPANION COMES TO PHILLY
It has come to pass…the KAWS Companion has landed at 30th Street Station.
Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in collaboration with Amtrak bought the 16 foot-tall Companion sculpture to rest at 30th Station.
Kaws Companion will be there until May 14th, then it’ll be hauled away for some other city to enjoy. Lucky for us, it’s departure won’t signify the end, but the arrival of the KAWS Sculpture Plinth Exhibit at PAFA.

Lost & Found by HOTTEA
Love this community project - HOTTEA takes yarn bombing out of the simple wrapping up a tree and gives it more purpose in a public space that simply doesn’t just inspire but touches lives directly.
In urban neighborhoods you’ll find courts, but often most are missing the nets. Now this temporary pink installation is providing a place where children discover or resume the sport.

The simple ideas are often the best. For example, bundles of pink yarn can become a net for a vacant tennis court in Minneapolis (USA), giving back its original function. It’s LOST & FOUND by HOT+TEA.

BODIES IN URBAN SPACES

COLOSSAL THE SMALL OPENING NIGHT
This past Saturday marked the packed opening night for the solo show of Philly Street Artist, NoseGo over at the James Oliver Gallery - we bought back some tasty sneak peeks for you.
There’s still time to check it out …the show is running until May 4th.
NAPPING at MoMA
Tilda Swinton is accomplishing what I’d love to do on the average day - take a nap at work. The actress best known for her androgynous looks has been on display at MoMa in a performance piece she calls, “The Maybe”.
Museum goers were surprised to find Swinton supposedly sleeping inside a enclosed glass box, furnished with only a white mattress, pillow, carafe of water and a glass. She sleeps during the museums open hours - some have said they’ve only seen her move or turn but never rouse.
“The Maybe” has been scheduled for six more performances throughout the year, though no one seems to know exactly when. Swinton has performed this piece in previous years: 1995 at London’s Serpentine Gallery and 1996 at Museo Barracco in Rome.
