FANTASTICAL CREATURES…

Philly Mural Arts Program is cranking it out …here’s some pics of their new collaboration with Paine’s Skatepark Fund and Philadelphia Parks and Recreation. The work of artists Yis Goodwin, Nathaniel Lee and Malachi Floyd and their take on the furry creatures of Fairmount Park is currently up along the fencing of the Schuylkill River Trail.

For the past 3 years Philadelphia based Paradigm Gallery + Studio has been exhibiting an amazing roster of artists and expanding on their dedication to the arts by providing exciting community art outreach programs. One of which is slated to jump off this weekend.

Paradigm provided materials to friends of the gallery, local artists, and community members, asking them to create something special. These donated artworks will be displayed in the gallery starting this Friday, March 22nd. Each piece of art will be offered at a pay-what-you-can price range, starting at $10. The project will help make it possible to further expand the gallery’s programming, and make it possible for a larger part of the community to have the opportunity to purchase local artwork at affordable prices.

Check out Paradigm’s Instagram account to preview some pieces.

SEPTA SPEAKEASY

The National Constitution Center is kicking their American Spirits: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition exhibit up a notch partnering with Philadelphia’s transportation company SEPTA. They’ve transformed the exterior and interior of several SEPTA Regional Rail Silverliner cars into mobile 1920’s speakeasy.

Here’s the fun part - if you take a photo on the train and post it to Twitter using the hashtag #NCCSpeakeasy or to Facebook and tag both the National Constitution Center and SEPTA you have a chance to win a pair of tickets to the American Spirits exhibition. SEPTA pass holders will also receive $2 off the regular admission price at the center’s box office.

Needless to say, I’m going to be taking the train more this month.

American Spirits: The Rise And Fall Of Prohibition

When: October 19, 2012-April 28, 2013
Where: 525 Arch Street
Cost: $17.50 for adults, $16 for seniors and students, $11 for children ages 4-12
More info: www.prohibition.constitutioncenter.org

HAHA MAG PICK OF THE DAY:

We love these minimalist CITY TRANSIT LINE POSTERS designed by the graphics team of Cayla & John. It’s a great way to show some love for your city and still maintain your cool art decor. They have a great selection of international cities and Line T-shirts as well over at their Etsy Shop.

BEFORE I DIE PHILLY

The Before I Die Project has come to Philadelphia! We’ve been riding by it all week trying to catch it in different stages.

Before I Die is an interactive public art project that invites people to share their hopes and dreams in public space. Painted with chalkboard paint and stenciled with the sentence “Before I die I want to _______”, the wall becomes a space where we could learn the hopes and dreams of the people around us.

*The wall is located on Broad Street bwtn Pine & Spruce

PHILLY’S OWN ‘ISHKNITS’ ON AMERICAN HIPSTER PRESENTS:

*OK SERIOUSLY, I KNOW IT’S A VIDEO, BUT STOP FOR A SEC AND WATCH THIS…

cause we are loving this documentary series that travels to different cities exposing you to its unique creative scene all while trying to change the negative perceptions of the term ‘hipster’.

In this episode, the host Paavo follows Jessie Hemmons, the Yarnbomber from Philadelphia who goes by ISHKNITS as she bombs an old payphone in the Fishtown section of the city.

CHECK OUT the previous posts we’ve put up of Jessie’s work here.

About 10 new paintings showed up today underneath the City Hall subway concourse. I imagine they’re part of the PIFA (Philadelphia International Festival of Arts) celebration…they’re a beautiful sight to start the day off with.
