INSIDE THE RAIN ROOM

Looks like I have another reason to visit the Rain Room over at MoMA (Museum of Modern Art). We were lucky enough to have a preview of the room the night of the MoMA PS1 Expo1 Opening Party. But alas, we lost our shots. So we’re giving you some amazing shots that folks have been taking while inside Random International’s exhibit.

The Rain Room is interactive - you step into this intense, expansive room with the roaring sound of rain coming down all around you, yet the installation’s sensors sense your movements and shut of the water around you - creating a magical effect, giving you the feel that you wield some control over the weather - not to mention, it makes for some pretty decent photo ops.

The exhibit runs until July 28th and is well worth the wait in line to experience.

ANIMAE DEMENTIA

Berlin has been invaded again with huge paper creatures/animals devouring up their creators, French street artists duo R.ö and l’Homme Pendu. They use a ‘wheat-pasted’ paper technique to place the creatues into the landscape and then suspend themselves within the work, appearing to be gobbled up by the creatures.

From R.ö:

“Here is my latest project an latest session , featuring l’Homme Pendu, a french friend of mine and myself, R.ö  called Animae Dementia, mixing rope access working and paste ups. Animae Dementia, means “soul madness”, or “animals madness”, highlights on crazy mystical beasts, put into urban spaces, and interacting with men, in different ways.”

Good viewing,

R.ö

*Thanks to R.ö & L’Homme Pendu who are always awesome about sending us their latest work. You might remember the last time we featured him, he was out in Berlin. You can check out more on their Blog & Facebook. - Ginger (Editor)

THE BALLERINA PROJECT

One of my favorite NYC sights is seeing dancers warming up in the subway…have you experienced it? You’re waiting for the train and all of a sudden the person standing next to you starts to do a plie. There’s just something about that kind of beauty against a urban backdrop.

Which is why I’m equally fascinated with a photo series that’s been around for sometime now, The Ballerina Project. It’s an ongoing  project by Dane Shitagi that depicts ballerinas amongst organic backdrops.

The project has been going steady for 10+ years in New York and now it’s trying to move on to a new phase – mini documentaries to compliment the photographs. Dane hopes these will give new audiences a more complete and accurate representation of ballet to help sustain it’s future.

*Unfortunately, Dane’s Kickstarter for this new phase ended 6 days ago without being funded. Here’s hoping he can get it rev’d up again.

**STORY was originally written for ARTNERDNY - where you can check out my weekly artnerd obsessions.

HIGH ON ART, HEAVY ON ANTICS

Yesterday I received an email from Philly-based Artist & MC, Dewey Decibel. His new video was dropping today he said…It’s called High on Art, he said.

Years ago I sat in a room with Dewey and rattled off the name of my then  new magazine. “That’s dope,” he said. So imagine how dope it was to play his new video in the office and hear the opening lines boom throughout the room…:”High on Art and I’m Heavy on Antics, I don’t understand why you don’t understand this..”

He took our moniker and made it his own. After all, that is the essence of HAHA MAG - Art For Everyone - I couldn’t be more honored.

ORLY GENGER - Red, Yellow and Blue

Madison Square Park Conservatory Square Art is installing Orly Genger’s trademark hand knotted nautical rope in Madison Square Park in waves of Red, Yellow and Blue - ”1.4 million feet of rope—the total length equating to nearly 20 times the length of Manhattan—covered in over 3,000 gallons of paint, and weighing over an astounding 100,000 pounds”!

Genger is using installation to create an interaction between the public and her art. The rope sections off and creates a new landscape in hopes that you will find and explore/navigate these spaces.

It’ll be there in all it’s glory until September 8th, 2013 until it gets shipped off to Boston, marking the first of Mad. Sq. Art’s commissions to travel.
