NAPPING at MoMA
Tilda Swinton is accomplishing what I’d love to do on the average day - take a nap at work. The actress best known for her androgynous looks has been on display at MoMa in a performance piece she calls, “The Maybe”.
Museum goers were surprised to find Swinton supposedly sleeping inside a enclosed glass box, furnished with only a white mattress, pillow, carafe of water and a glass. She sleeps during the museums open hours - some have said they’ve only seen her move or turn but never rouse.
“The Maybe” has been scheduled for six more performances throughout the year, though no one seems to know exactly when. Swinton has performed this piece in previous years: 1995 at London’s Serpentine Gallery and 1996 at Museo Barracco in Rome.

SPOTLIGHT: Clifford Owens
It’s that time again… we’re continuing our Black History Month series with a profile on the always controversial, Visual Artist, Clifford Owens.
Preferring the term Visual Artist over Performance Artist; Owen’s work is never dull, usually dealing with heavy issues of race, gender relationships and auto-eroticism - often leaving you to deal with/question his purposeful lack of emotional & physical control.
Like when I found myself confronted with his video work that dealt with different forms of abjection and how we deal or don’t deal with it. That’s all well and good - I was down to explore that until I was confronted with Owens gutting, fingering and doing all sorts of things to fruit that one couldn’t imagine unless one saw. Then it gets uncomfortable, then he takes you to that zone. He’s transforming a meaning, but can you bare to watch it unfold.
Owens claims no interest in the art world, “because the art world is not interesting,” his work has spurned new found interest in performance art. Here’s a link to a great ArtInfo article - 27 Questions with Clifford Owens.
Come follow us on Twitter today (@hahamag #spotlight) as we tweet links to Owens work online.

INNER COURSE - KNOWING ME, KNOWING YOU

During the Pulse Art Fair I had a ball participating in the performance art piece Inner Course with the lovely ladies Rya Kleinpeter + Tora Lopez. These two artistically raw, scantily clad cabaret runaways invited me in their booth to open up and create a tangible artistic discourse with them.

I’m pretty shy, so thank god someone else wanted to ‘double up’ on this experience. So ‘Flash’ (that was her name) and I collaborated on a piece. So with seven minutes in a glass room full of art supplies we talked…we created and then we decided what to give our hosts in exchange for our experience; in exchange for our art.

And yeah, we walked away with video and some pics, so you can vicariously join in as well. As usual, I hate being in pictures - so i’m present in none - except for that shot of my fingers…

James Franco Interviews Artist Marina Abramovic

Seriously…I’m just as shocked as you to see that he even knows who Marina Abramovic is. But Franco is a former Cal Arts student with a serious penchant for Performance Art.

Still befuddled by this news? Then, read his article in the Wall Street Journal of all places.
