ORLY GENGER - Red, Yellow and Blue

Madison Square Park Conservatory Square Art is installing Orly Genger’s trademark hand knotted nautical rope in Madison Square Park in waves of Red, Yellow and Blue - ”1.4 million feet of rope—the total length equating to nearly 20 times the length of Manhattan—covered in over 3,000 gallons of paint, and weighing over an astounding 100,000 pounds”!

Genger is using installation to create an interaction between the public and her art. The rope sections off and creates a new landscape in hopes that you will find and explore/navigate these spaces.

It’ll be there in all it’s glory until September 8th, 2013 until it gets shipped off to Boston, marking the first of Mad. Sq. Art’s commissions to travel.

KAWS COMPANION COMES TO PHILLY

It has come to pass…the KAWS Companion has landed at 30th Street Station.

Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in collaboration with Amtrak bought the 16 foot-tall Companion sculpture to rest at 30th Station.

Kaws Companion will be there until May 14th, then it’ll be hauled away for some other city to enjoy.  Lucky for us, it’s departure won’t signify the end, but the arrival of the KAWS Sculpture Plinth Exhibit at PAFA.

Lost & Found by HOTTEA

Love this community project - HOTTEA  takes yarn bombing out of the simple wrapping up a tree and gives it more purpose in a public space that simply doesn’t just inspire but touches lives directly.

In urban neighborhoods you’ll find courts, but often most are missing the nets. Now this temporary pink installation is providing a place where children discover or resume the sport.

publicdesignfestival:

The simple ideas are often the best. For example, bundles of pink yarn can become a net for a vacant tennis court in Minneapolis (USA), giving back its original function. It’s LOST & FOUND by HOT+TEA.

*You guys’ loved the blog we did on the Conflict Kitchen sometime back…if you’re in the NY area on Friday 10/12, you can experience it for yourself at the Creative Time Summit.
creativetime:

Conflict Kitchen | Creative Time Summit Presenter | October 12 | Skirball Center, NYC
Operating seven days a week in the center of Pittsburgh, Conflict Kitchen is a take-out restaurant that exclusively serves cuisine from countries with which the United States is in conflict. Every six months, the take-out style storefront rotates to highlight a different country. Each iteration of the restaurant is augmented by events, performances, and discussions that seek to expand public engagement with the culture, politics, and issues at stake within the focus country. These events have included live international Skype dinner parties between residents of Pittsburgh and young professionals in Tehran, Iran, documentary filmmakers in Kabul, Afghanistan, and community radio activists in Caracas, Venezuela. The restaurant is a site of ever-changing ethnic diversity in the post-industrial city of Pittsburgh and has presented the only Iranian, Afghan, Venezuelan, and Cuban restaurants the city has ever hosted. Conflict Kitchen is a project created and directed by artists Jon Rubin and Dawn Weleski, with culinary direction by Chef Robert Sayre.

10,000 GLOWING BOOKS

That Artistic Duo- Luzinterruptus - you know the ones that make everything GLOw are at it again; this time with their largest installation yet, 10,000 Glowing Books, at the Light in Winter Festival in Melbourne.

The theme of the festival was ‘reading’, so Luzinterruptus was asked to recreate a previous piece they’d done in NY called, Literature vs. Traffic.

The month-long install covered a large strip of Federation Square with 10,000 books outfitted with little light bulbs. For thirty days, people had the opportunity to pick through  books that were discarded & donated by libraries, that overflowed out over public spaces and into the streets.

PAINTING FAVELAS

Nothing will get our attention faster than a worth-while public art project. Boa Mistura, a Hispanic art collective went into one of Sao Paulo’s slums (favelas) to reach the community through art.

What they came up with was a colorful representation of the people who live there. Their Anamorphic paintings, send out messages of beauty, pride and hope.

The words used were: Amor (Love); Doçura (Tenderness); Beleza (Beauty); Firmeza (Stability) and Orgulho (Pride).

“The five-headed crew repainted several vecos and vielas – those winding streets, being the true articulators of the internal life of the community”.
